Consists of one photostat copy of a letter dated 5 July 1881 by Nathaniel J. Rowell, a newspaper reporter in Washington, to his mother telling her of President Garfield's assassination. Also includes a slip of paper with the autograph of Charles Guiteau pasted to a paper backing and a typed letter signed by William A. Strong to Abram Garfield of Cleveland, Ohio, presenting the photostat copy of the letter written by his uncle, Nathaniel J. Rowell, dated 6 January 1942 from Cleveland.

Born in Freeport, Illinois, Charles J. Guiteau was connected with the Oneida Community but later sued them. He was admitted to the Bar of Illinois but mostly worked as a bill collector.
